In order to preserve the Georgian gene pool, over a century ago, the first Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in the region – VIVI was founded.
The leading specialists under the leadership of Solomon Cholokashvili started working towards the founding of scientific-research institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, in order to save Georgian vine.
The work included searching, collecting, researching and preserving of aborigine varieties of vine. For this purpose, the first scientific-experimental base was established.
In Telavi, on the first collection plot, there were gathered more than 400 ancient Georgian varieties of vine.
